Monthly Archives: November 2009

The oddest, and potentially scariest thing happened to me yesterday.

So, I had ordered my Christmas present for my sister online about a week ago, and had taken the option to ship via UPS (Mistake number one).  On Monday, I came home from work, and saw the UPS “We attempted to deliver this package” notice on my door.  Fair enough – I work 8-5 and I usually miss it anytime I get a package delivered.  I happily signed the release, stuck it on my door, and assumed they’d just drop it by my front door whenever they got around to my place the next day.

The next day, I was away in Weyburn for the day, and didn’t get back until about 5:00PM.  When I got to my desk, I saw a large, square package sitting there.  I had just assumed it was the recorder for the News team, but instead it was from Netlink computers instead.  After checking out the shipping label, sure enough – it was addressed to my home, not work!  I talked to our receptionist, and she said that they just said they have a package for me and she happily signed for it.

What makes this so confusing is that I’ve never had UPS ship a package to my work, nor was my work address listed anywhere on the invoice or on the label.  Heck, it’s not even like I’m on-air and would know I’m from the station!  It’s all so very confusing…..and kind of worrying at the same time.  What else do these people know about me?

Then again, I may just be in a conspiracy happy mood, but I honestly have no good explanation for it.  Anyone have any ideas why that would happen?

I’d like to think of myself as a fairly optimistic and future-ready kind of person, but am I the only one in the world who’s afraid of what the phrase “Technology Anywhere” means?  The thought of having email, cellphone, Twitter, Facebook, and everything essentially tied down to me no matter where I am or where I go doesn’t sit well for me.  Maybe it’s the fact that after being on-call for almost a year with my new job and having been phoned at wee hours in the morning for stupid problems, or maybe it’s the fact of having a crazy ex-girlfriend who after almost three months of having been broken up and having been told to leave me alone numerous times still tries to contact me.  Either way, there is something to be said about being “off the radar” at certain points in time.

Next week, I go on vacation for seven days, and the biggest thing I’m going to enjoy doing during it is being able to turn my phone off.  Not having to worry about equipment failure, or someone who didn’t press a button when they should have, or someone creepy once again trying to get in contact with me.  I can choose when I want people to contact me, and when they can leave me alone.  It’s a small thing, but it’s such a happy thing to actually hear the sound of your phone turning off.

And yes, I do still want an iPhone, but I probably won’t be putting my work email on it…..at least not for as long as I can get away with it.
